"We're out of doughnuts!!!"
The end of the world has been a popular fascination with
humans, especially in the last half century since the U.S. decided to drop the
atom bomb on Japan. Visions of the worlds end have ranged from a nuclear
holocaust to the Christian rapture.
By and large, most
people are not content with the idea of fading away in a nursing facility or in
a hospice suffering from a crippling disease; we want to go out fighting. The
idea of an apocalypse lets our imagination fulfill that need, particularly in
the event of a zombie apocalypse.
Believe
it or not, the idea of zombies taking over the world is not a concept that is
exclusive to chat rooms and fan pages on the internet. Several grad students
have created dissertations on the subject in order to gain their doctorate
degree and a better understanding of human nature. One popular theory amongst
academics is that societies obsession over zombies may come from a sense of
helplessness with regards to the government and the economy. Clemson University
professor, Sarah Lauro notes, “Zombies
are infecting popular culture, from television to movies and video games, and
it has to do with how people feel today.” Scientists and psychologists seem
to agree that even if it is on an unconscious level, most people are drawn to zombies because of this, and not just the copious amounts gore and violence.
Professor
Lauro continues, “We are more interested
in the zombie in times when as a culture we feel disempowered.” “The facts are
there that, when we are experiencing economic crises, the vast population is
feeling disempowered. …Either playing dead themselves … or watching a show like
‘Walking Dead’ provides a great variety of outlets for people.” Lauro Went
on to say, “If you were to ask the
participants, of a zombie walk, I don’t think that all of them are very
cognizant of what they’re saying when they put on the zombie makeup and
participate.” “To me, it’s such an
obvious allegory. We feel like, in one way, we’re dead.”

Your article really drew my eye. I know that this is not what our assignment is about, but it is very helpful to have pictures to look at as you read! I had a hard time understanding what your question on the subject was though? Although I didn't quite understand your question, I think that your topic is really cool. I think that our generation obsesses about the world ending and how it is going to end that it is something that should be researched because it is a fun topic. I think making your question more clear and researching deeper into how we believe the world is going to end will make your research easier! I am not sure if your question is about zombies though? If so, research more on zombies! Look forward on more to come!
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind you need to introduce TWO sources for this post, and be sure to link to them! Right now, your readers (including me) have no way of finding this source from Clemson University. In turn, I don't see any exploration or questioning going on in his post -- it's entirely informational. Remember our purpose for the blog assignment!
ReplyDeleteI like your topic a lot. I never really connected the thought of zombies and the fact that when people die, they wanna go out fighting. That was a very cool point to bring up. I've always loved the idea of zombies and thats why this blog caught my attention. I didn't know what to expect with an exploratory blog on zombies, but so far it's well done and very interesting. Make sure to clearly state your overall question for this blog, because I'm still a bit confused about what it is. Love the pictures and captions as well, but don't forget to tell where your pics come from, if there not your own!!(: Pretty awesome so far.
